Fin del Mundo – Shoegaze from Tierra del Fuego.

Heading to Buenos Aires by way of Madrid tonight for a session from Fin del Mundo, recorded by RNE Radio 3 for the Los Conciertos de Radio 3 series.

Fin del Mundo is a band from Buenos Aires formed in 2019, with roots in the southernmost region of Patagonia: Tierra del Fuego and Chubut. Their music invites us to travel both places through melodies, lyrics and instrumental passages that combine an indie sound with nuances of emotional post-rock. While their first songs released in April 2020 became the soundtrack of our strange days of isolation, their second release looks for other musical directions to prove that the “end of the world” is also the beginning of a new stage.

Ever since the early days of My Space (a website truly missed for a lot of reasons, and this is one of them), the number of bands doing inventive and far-reaching musical explorations has been most prevalent in South America, particularly in Chile and Argentina, where there has been a healthy scene for some years now. It’s gratifying and very healthy to see bands like Fin del Mundo come north, doing sessions for KEXP and introducing America to what undiscovered gems are lurking south of our own border. And I would be remiss to add an equally healthy scene has been developing in Mexico, particularly Mexico City and Tijuana – so as much we’ve been hearing lately about the huge popularity K-Pop and K-Indie are having in Mexico and South America, the Latin influence has been making inroads in Asia.

Further evidence the circle is getting smaller and the conversation is moving deeper. If we weren’t in such a state of despair over our current state of the world, there would be ample grounds for outright joy that Music, despite everything is bringing cultures together.

Perhaps, by way of irony, Fin del Mundo (End of The World) speaks volumes. Timing, as they say, is everything.

There is hope – there will always be hope – there will always be change.
