Diving headfirst into the weekend with one of the cornerstone bands of the early 90s Shoegaze era. Lush in concert from La Cigale, in Paris on October 19, 1991.
Further evidence the 90s were a veritable wonderland of ideas and sounds. Lush were transformative and profound – painting a sonic landscape in vibrant colors with a dreamlike quality to vocals which, sadly are mixed way too up front to instill the wave of mystery that was such a signature during these formative years. Still, you get an idea of just how important Lush were in the grand scheme of things.
That Lush were relatively short-lived owing to an unforeseen tragedy that shook the band to its core, begs the questions of “what if” – but that Miki and Emma have gone on to establish solo careers and news bands with new ideas lends substance to the notion Lush were no accident.
But Lush in 1991 were very special and this concert (and in fact other concerts from Lush that were not recorded from the 20th row) and sessions really substantiated their legacy – we’re also lucky in that all their work has been seeing the light of reissue – solidifying their place as essential listening for an era of mixing influences and blazing new paths.
To give you an idea what Lush were all about during this relatively early period in the band’s history – here is their performance at La Cigale in Paris on October 19, 1991 and broadcast by RTL-Radio.
As you probably know by now, Past Daily is going through a few changes. Over the past several months we’ve been introducing new features and losing old ones. We’ve begun to run ads, only because we really need the income to stay online and hope this isn’t a problem. Of course, if you consider subscribing and becoming a Patron via Patreon, you get the posts ad-free and the option to download all the audio we post here – our way of saying thank you for your support. Joining Patreon is easy and we’ve made it even easier for you by offering you a free trial to kick the tires, as it were. All you have to do is click on the red box just below, the one that says Become A Patron, and be part of the family. We’ll be offering more perks as time goes on – but we need to get stable first and we can only do that with your support. So do everybody a favor and join us – we’d love to have you!
