Anwar Sadat - Middle East.
Anwar Sadat – the delicate dance of The Middle East.

August 2, 1977 – The Middle East leads the news this day. Secretary of State Vance was deep in talks with Egypt’s Anwar Sadat over the current crisis in the Middle East and an effort to solve the situation with a reconvened Peace Conference to be set in Geneva. At issue was the PLO which stood in the way of a potentially successful series of talks with Yassar Arafat insisting on taking part in the talks. Sadat was devising on a plan to work about PLO participation which was also resisted by Israel. One plan Sadat was entertaining was a formula to create a provisional Palestinian government which would, in effect, replace the PLO. For its part, the PLO issued a statement declaring that any effort towards a Middle East settlement had to include the PLO in talks.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Senate and House conferees remained at logger heads over the issue of auto emission standards. They were slated to meet later on in the day with the hopes of a breakthrough compromise. They were under pressure because the auto industry was threatening to halt production unless it got a bill it could live with. So far it was a deadlock.

And Ice Cream was the focus of an uproar as members of the House Agriculture committee held hearings on a rule change from the FDA that would allow ice cream manufacturers to substitute Casein, a chemical protein derived from milk for the milk or cream otherwise required in any frozen dessert labeled Ice Cream. Representatives from the Dairy Association said such a ruling would have bad consequences on Dairy farmers saying the FDA ruling would threaten the integrity of Ice Cream. The Ice Cream manufacturers said it would save consumers money while staying “nutritious, delicious and America’s Number One Fun Food”.

And on that happy note . . .along with the Middle East looming, is a small slice of what happened, this second day of August in 1977 as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.

And while you’re here . . .you know we don’t run ads – stopped running them more than a few years ago. The ads were noisy and pretty awful and they were a huge distraction, having to wade through a lot of useless barking in order to get to the good stuff. But we still have to pay the bills, and there’s a ton of them and they don’t like to wait. And so we ask you consider becoming a subscriber and support all the stuff we do every day by kicking in what amounts to being an Americano Grande every month to be part of the solution and not the problem. In todays bizarre economy it ain’t much – but it means a ton to Past Daily. All you have to do (and we make this as simple and pain-free as possible) is head over to Patreon (that red box just below that says “Become A Patron” that you click on) and check us out.
