A day in the continuing story of change unfolding in Nicaragua, this March 3rd in 1990.
News of the victory in Nicaragua of Violeta Chamorro, replacing Daniel Ortega as President, and the story of changes going on in that new chapter in Central American politics.
And aside from Nicaragua, news of upcoming elections in Moscow – with President Mikhail Gorbachev looking slightly askance at the potentially dismal turnout. Since Russia has always had elections, even during Soviet the era, turnout has been dismal at best. And this one, where Gorbachev had been touting his much publicized Glasnost and Perestroika and the need for reform candidates to take over the municipal elections taking place, he wasn’t optimistic the outcome would be good.
Crossing fingers over other outcomes was the status over ongoing trade talks between the U.S. and Japan. The were proceeding with caution – but they were proceeding.
A flare up in violence in Panama, with a bomb going off in a crowded Panama City nightclub, injuring some 19, including some 16 U.S. servicemen. At the time of this broadcast, reports were still sketchy, but it was confirmed someone had thrown a bomb through the nightclub window.
And the Greyhound Bus strike was heading in the direction of nasty this day – with reports of vandalism and strike-related violence among the 49,000 striking bus drivers, clerks and maintenance personnel, during the second day of the strike.
And while they were celebrating in Nicaragua, that’s a small slice of what went on this March 3rd in 1990, as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.
