A busy day for President Eisenhower, this September 23, 1954 – The President embarked on an important political swing on through the West in a major effort to revitalize the GOP fight for a Republican controlled Congress. The Chief Executive was advised yesterday by GOP National Chairman Leonard Hall that the Republicans are “running scared.” Hall said he told the President that House and Senate candidates throughout the country faced a “hard fight”. The President’s three-day, whirlwind air tour will take him through four States Washington, Oregon, Montana and California–where 42 House and three Senate seats are at stake.
He made the first of four political speeches late today at Missoula, Mont. There he gave a firm endorsement of Rep. Wesley D’Ewart (R) Mont., who was running for the Senate against the Democratic incumbent, Sen. James E. Murray, and dedicated the new aerial fire depot of the Agriculture Department forest service.
He appeared on an airport platform with D’Ewart and saluted him as “my good friend.” Also present at Missoula were Rep. Lee Metcalf (D) Mont,. and Winfield Page, a Republican architect who is running against Metcalf for the 1st Congressional District seat in Congress from Montana.
The President, who will deliver in Hollywood Bowl tonight one of the major addresses of the congressional campaign, is expected to arrive at International Airport at 5 p.m. and leave immediately over an officially designated route to the Statler Hotel.
All that and more for this September 23, 1954 as presented by Douglas Edwards and The News You Can Use over CBS Radio.
