Silo to get Tuesday rolling in a sonically stimulating fashion. Recorded at the famous (and infamous on this particular year, 2000) Roskilde Festival on July 1, 2000 and preserved for posterity by Sveriges Radio P3.
For the record, there are several bands named Silo – none of them sound remotely like this one.
FYI: Silo formed in Copenhagen 1995 by Frederik Ammitzbøll (guitar, vocals, electronics, lyrics), Mikkel Bender (bass guitar, lyrics) and Søren Dahlgaard (drums, visuals).
Silo has performed alongside artists such as Sigur Rós, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Wire, Pole, Lydia Lunch, Lobe, Trans Am, Chris & Cosey (Throbbing Gristle), Jim O´Rourke (Sonic Youth) and Tortoise.
Guest vocals by High Priest and M. Sayyid (Antipop Consortium) and Jonas Bjerre (MEW) on the album Work, 2014.
Concerts include The Roskilde Festival, Denmark, 2000, Noise Pop Festival, Chicago, 2000, Maria am Ostbahnhof, Berlin, 1999, Festival of Drifting, Union Chapel, London, 1999 and Volksbühne, Berlin, 1998.
They have released three albums, the last one about 13 years ago (and rumors of a new one). Fans (rightly so) have declared them criminally underrated and overlooked – but in our current state of musical affairs, it’s something of a free-for-all and “he with the most traffic wins” that can lead to a lot of missed opportunities, or bands being relegated to word-of-mouth and cult status. It doesn’t really help sustaining a band’s eating or bill paying obligations, but it’s becoming more and more of an impossibility for artists to focus strictly on their music and not be straddled to a 9-5 job while honing, crafting and performing.
Which is why, when you see someone like Silo performing anywhere, buy everything you can and visit their website regularly – we’re talking livelihoods here and making art. In Silo’s case, a good place to start is their Facebook page. There are links and a community of fans you can connect with who probably know much more about what’s going on with them. You can also support them, which just about every performing musician is in desperate need of.
So have a listen. Wrap your head around them, and go exploring. A lot of solid and very worthy music out there – all you have to do is press Browse.
In the meantime, press Play and get Tuesday up and rolling.
