Since tonight is a big night in the Music Business (or it used to be), I thought it might be good to take a look back at The Grammys 34 years ago on a night just like this one. The business has changed, the people have changed, the audience has changed. The Music is still the same (the notes, anyway).

The Grammy© Awards have always been a big media event. Aside from the actual presentation of the awards and the ceremony itself, there are the interviews – the Press area backstage where breathless and dazed performers are barraged by a tsunami of questions; some legit, some downright silly; but always interesting.

This is a sampling of those interviews, most of them, as part of the Radio and Print press conference coverage of the Grammys. There’s a chunk of history here – from the opening interview with Leon Huff to the spontaneous lovefest with Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker. An awkward (and in the end contentious and cut-off) interview with Milli Vanilli, who would later have the whole thing unravel in an unceremonious way. A downright giddy barrage of questions to Paul McCartney and a lot more in between for a little over an hour.

A slice of Music history, to be sure. The Grammys from Thirty-four years ago – what it was all about then. It was the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s.
