Certainly one of that crop of bands aligning themselves with New Wave, A Flock Of Seagulls were possibly more well-known for lead-singer/keyboard player Mike Score‘s bizarre hair configuration than for their actual musical contribution.
However, A Flock of Seagulls were a very popular band during the New Wave phase of the early 1980’s. With several hits and a look tailor-made to the fledgling MTV audience, they had a healthy stream of success from 1979-1986, before breaking up. They reunited in 1989 and are, as far as is known, still around (but without Mike Score and his intense comb-over).
Here they are in their earlier incarnation, playing a concert at the BBC‘s Paris Theatre in London, and recorded by the venerable BBC for their In Concert series.
Going through a period of dismissal and then rediscovery, A Flock of Seagulls has come to epitomize the New Wave movement and the odd fashion statements that went along with it.
Fortunately for us, since this is an audio-only site, watching a video of them might yield a different result than listening to them – for one thing, you get to concentrate on the music and not the presentation. I think, under the circumstances, the hair design hasn’t held up over the years (if it ever was popular). The music strangely does.
Check it out and decide for yourself.
