Hockey Dad – Live From The Forum Theatre, Melbourne – April 24, 2021 – Triple J Radio –
Over to Australia tonight for a concert by Indie/Surf-Rock conflagration Hockey Dad – recorded at The Forum Theatre in Melbourne on April 24, 2021 by Radio outlet Triple J.
Not entirely sure if this show was hot on the heels of coming out of a lockdown or on the heels of going back into one. Australia has been the site of many varying lockdown situations since the COVID pandemic broke out. Whatever the case, the audience is happy to see them, most likely relieved to be actually out in a concert venue and among the human race.
Hockey Dad are huge on their home turf, but they are also well-known in other parts of the world. Together since 2013 and naming themselves after a joke from the Simpsons TV series, they were initially a Surf/garage band, heavily steeped in 60s surf. But in recent years the direction has added Indie to the mix and it’s done wonders to broaden their appeal.
Recording as a duo, but live-performing as a full-on band, Hockey Dad have three albums out so far; all in Australia, but the signed with Kanine Records who have distribution in North America. So the reputation is growing. Hockey Dad also ran a tour across United States and Canada in support of their debut album. Lasting from the 10th of August to the 1st of September 2016, the tour consisted of 18 shows across fourteen states and two Canadian provinces. Musical group Muuy Biien played alongside Hockey Dad for this tour for all dates except that in San Francisco. This was the first tour Hockey Dad has performed in North America, previous visits only for music festivals.
For now, while everything is up in the air, Hockey Dad are sticking around Australia, while the world sorts itself out from the Pandemic. Hit the Player and have a listen to what they were up to earlier this year.
