Over to Strasbourg by way of Paris this week for a concert by Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, led by Marc Albrecht and featuring Christian Tetzlaff, violin – the concert was recorded by Radio Strasbourg on February 11, 2011 and re-broadcast by Radio France Musique later on.
On the program today is music by Bertrand, Debussy and Beethoven with violinist Christian Tetzlaff joining in for the Beethoven Violin Concerto.
The concert starts with the world premier of Okhtor by Christoph Bertrand. It’s quickly followed by a performance of Khamma by Claude Debussy and the concert ends with a performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto featuring Christian Tetzlaff, violin solo.

“Albrecht lifted this listener out of the concert hall and deposited me in a baleful landscape the like of which I’d never previously encountered in this music. By the careful highlighting of specific solos or sections, then allowing balance to follow naturally, he did more than conquer the Royal Albert Hall’s exuberant acoustic: he exploited it. This accursed huntsman’s musical material may be thinly stretched over the 14-minute running time but Franck’s orchestral colours enrich it triumphantly and Albrecht’s conducting ripped it from the page.“
And a word or two about our soloist Christian Tetzlaff via Wikipedia:
His breakthrough as a soloist came in 1988, at the age of 22, when he performed Schoenberg’s Violin Concerto in critically acclaimed concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic. The following year he made his solo recital debut in New York City. He has continued to play as a soloist with major orchestras on stage and in recordings, including Beethoven’s works for violin and orchestra performed with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich under David Zinman. He returned to New York in 2011 for a recital with Antje Weithaas at Zankel Hall. In 2012 he joined his sister Tanja (cello) and Leif Ove Andsnes (piano) playing Schumann’s piano trios, which were awarded. Other critically acclaimed recordings include his 2007 release of Bach’s sonatas and partitas for solo violin, and in 2012 his release of three Mozart violin sonatas with Lars Vogt. His recording of Schumann’s violin sonatas with Lars Vogt (piano) was named Gramophone’s recording of the month for January 2014. His discography includes a number of modern works such as the violin concertos of György Ligeti and Stuart MacRae.
