While the focus was on the tiny scattering of islands in the South Atlantic known as The Falklands (or Malvinas, if you were in Argentina), negotiations for a peaceful settlement were ramping up to a fevered pitch. This time America was jumping into the fray; acting as middle-man between London and Buenos Aires. Talks between Secretary of State Haig and representatives of both Britain and Argentina, who took turns presenting their case and not being in the same room at the same time. Today, talks concluded with British Foreign Minister Francis Pym, who went back to No. 10 to spend some two hours relaying details to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. And then it was Argentina’s turn, with Nicanor Costa Mendes official lodging a complaint to the OAS that two British warships were within 54 miles of the Falklands and that five additional ships were within Helicopter and Plane range of the South Georgias. Argentina was sending a representative to New York to file a complaint with the OAS that Britain was in violation of all rules and regulations as well as the Rio Treaty. Costa Mendes was expected to address the OAS in New York on Monday after meeting with Secretary Haig over the weekend.

Elsewhere – five South Korean fishing boats along with some 60 crew members were seized by what appeared to be North Korean patrol boats in the Yellow Sea. There was no reason given for their seizure.

And Israel was observing a solemn Sabbath with news that the Jewish settlement of Ofira in the Sinai were being dismantled ahead of a 24 hour deadline to return the Sinai to Egypt. It was to be marked by a modest 10 minute flag-lowering ceremony. Once the Israeli army leaves, the settlement would return to Egypt where it would assume its original name Sharm El-Sheikh.

And that’s just a little of what went on this April 24, 1982 along with the Falklands crisis changing from moment to moment – all reported on The CBS World News Roundup.
