September 21, 1995 – aside from a business-as-usual day on Capitol Hill, it was also Presidential outrage from Bill Clinton in reaction to the latest batch of ads from clothier Calvin Klein. The series, which featured visibly younger models in a TV commercial which ran into suggestive territory also sparked outrage via the sides of most city busses. President Clinton blasted the ads, saying in effect he had a daughter their perceived age and he likened the ads to “kiddie porn”. Although Klein pulled the ads, he assured the public the so called “kids” were all over 18. Still, the outrage was there and once again, Calvin Klein got people’s attention.
Also getting people’s attention was the anticipated unveiling of the GOP Medicare/Medical revision Bill. True to form, it led to skirmishes and brickbats all over Capitol Hill – with many battles spilling into the halls of Congress as microphones pointed and cameras rolled. It no doubt made for good news coverage, but it made for bad anxiety to those depending on Medicare for saving lives. Silver lining came in the form of the White House asurring such a bill, if passed the House would arrive dead on the President’s desk. Small comfort.
And the OJ Simpson trial was heading down the final stretch before being handed to the jury for deliberation. Both sides were confident they would win and the issue was 1st degree of 2nd degree Murder convictions. Defense Attorney Johnnie Cochran, ever the showman, likened the Prosecution’s case as “Mountains out of molehills”. The mantra “if the gloves don’t fit you must acquit” still spinning in everyone’s ears.
And that’s just a little of how it went, this September 21st in 1995 as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.
