Starting the year with more sad news from the Music Community. Word earlier this evening of the passing of The Father of Modern Gospel Music, Andrae Crouch at 72. News reports gave the cause of death as a massive heart attack early this afternoon. Crouch was rushed to Northridge Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles where efforts to revive him failed.
Crouch was a hugely influential figure in Gospel Music from the 1960s on, working with everyone from Elvis Presley to Madonna. He was as popular with Pop Audiences as he was with Gospel audiences. His appeal and his approach transcended genres and he was one of only a handful of Gospel singers to be given a Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
As way of tribute tonight, I quickly dug out a performance of Andrae Crouch and The Disciples from the JubileeTV series from 1975. Classic Andrae Crouch and a sample of his huge and lasting appeal.
One of a kind. And now there is one less. Sad for us all, but grateful we have his artistry for inspiration for decades to come.
