Starting from Vatican City – The body of Pope Paul VI sealed in an oak, lead and cypress coffin, was borne to the Vatican to lie in state before the main altar at St. Peter’s Basilica until the funeral Mass on Saturday and burial in the grottos of the church. The coffin was flanked by a crucifix on one side and a candle, signifying eternal life, on the other.
A crowd of 35.000 watched silently as several hundred prelates holding burning candles walked in long lines in St. Peter’s Square.
Meanwhile – Vietnam, which is engaged in a border war with Cambodia, is reporting that a rash of insurrections has erupted across Cambodia over the past several weeks. Many of the alleged revolts are said to have been carried out by regular-army units. Analysts in Washington, saying they have no way of confirming the reports put out by Vietnamese media, suspect that Hanoi is orchestrating a Cambodian revolutionary movement to bring pressure on Phnom Penh to settle their violent dispute. In an acknowledgement that at least some Cambodians have gone into opposition, Phnom Penh has begun denouncing collaborationists and “running dogs” who are helping the Vietnamese integrate Cambodia into the Vietnamese-dominated, abominable Indochina federation”.
And in New York – The city’s three major newspapers today shut down, their publishers unifying in a tough stance over printing pressmen who struck in a dispute over proposed staff cuts. The two morning papers, the Daily Post, ceased publication late Wednesday when negotiations with 1,500 pressmen failed to win relief from what the papers see as overstaffing. The three papers have a combined circulation of 3.5 million. The dailies carried through with a threat made two weeks ago when they would post new work rules at a specific time if no settlement was reached to replace a contract that expired March 30. The rules institute an attrition program to reduce pressroom workers by as much as 50 percent over several years.
