One of the truly wonderful parts about having friends in bands is being privy to monumental events from their conception to birth, and witnessing the excitement of first-hearing and the universal approval of what is an astonishing first entrance.
Having the pleasure of knowing former Portishead and now Black Submarine drummer Mig Schillace I would, not only be turned on to new bands passing through his native Bristol, but also get regular updates on the progress of the formation of his new band.
Initially called The Black Ships, they were well in to new and interesting territory a few years ago, while they were honing, experimenting, perfecting and building what would eventually be re-christened Black Submarine.
I would get regular reports on the recording process. All the time spent mixing, adding, over-dubbing, sequencing, layering, the careful crafting of a final piece of work which everyone would be proud.
The relief, the anxiety and the anticipation and finally the finished product.
This past February their debut album New Shores was released. The word has been positive, the album is selling well (I’m not sure if the vinyl version is still available or not – the CD as well as the download via iTunes is), and the band is hitting the road to get the message out.
There’s a tour of the UK currently going on, supporting Echo and The Bunnymen until May 20th. The official tour starts in October.
So far, no U.S. dates – but should that change, they are a band you absolutely cannot, under any circumstances miss.
As a sample of what’s in store – here is their first issued single, Here So Rain from the album.
A band to watch in the coming weeks/months. They are, without a doubt, one of the most exciting new bands on the horizon. I predict a huge success.
But don’t take my word for it. Hit the Play button.
