A very special and rare concert this week. Legendary Russian violinist David Oistrakh in concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, guest conducted by Maurice Abravanel in music of J.C. Bach, Mozart and Sibelius. The concert was recorded, but never broadcast or made available in any form, on December 8, 1965.
Oistrakh was certainly the Dean among violinists of the 1950s and 1960s. His recordings have been sought after by collectors and musicians for years, and many of his performances in the Russian repertory are considered definitive and rarely equalled.
The concert is split up between two players. Here’s what’s on them:
L.A. Philharmonic – Maurice Abravanel, guest Conductor
David Oistrakh, violin – December 8, 1965
Part 1 (top player)
1. J.C. Bach – Sinfonia in B-flat major.
2. Mozart – Violin Concerto in D-Major. K. 218 (w/Oistrakh)
Part 2 (bottom player)
1. Sibelius – Violin Concerto in D minor. (w/Oistrakh)
No announcements at all -just the raw stereo tape.
Enjoy and play often.
