Election ’88 was going full swing, this March 13th. Vice-President George Bush crushed his Republican opponents in the South Carolina GOP Primary the day before. As of this day, Bush has 705 delegates, while Dole was a distant second with 163. Robertson has 17. Meanwhile, a Newsweek poll released Saturday showed that Bush would beat Dukakis, Gore or Jackson if the presidential election were held today. The telephone survey of 755 voters Thursday and Friday had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The poll also indicated that Dukakis would beat Dole, but only by 1 percentage point within the survey’s margin of error.
Dole would beat either Gore or Jackson, according to the survey. There was still Super Tuesday to think about, but for now they were celebrating at Bush Headquarters.
Meanwhile – a scandal was brewing in the Car Insurance business. It was disclosed that the major car rental companies were soaking customers who didn’t take their insurance and who also got into accidents. The rental companies would make repairs and charge the individual renters own insurance company 2-3 times what repairs cost – often causing the driver to lose insurance with that company. It also explained by Car Insurance rates were skyrocketing and it set the stage for some major scrutiny on Capitol Hill.
And a U.S. military team arrived in Hanoi to discuss the fate of more than 1,700 American servicemen listed as missing in action since the Indochina War ended in 1975, officials reported. “A six-man team led by Lt. Col. Joe Harvey, Commander of the U.S.
Joint Casualty Resolution Center, will conduct a technical meeting in Hanoi” today through Tuesday, U.S. Embassy spokesman Ross Petzing said. The technical talks, which focus on locating the remains of American servicemen, and investigating unconfirmed “live sighting” reports of American military prisoners in Vietnam, began more than five years ago. Six meetings are scheduled annually but Hanoi, displeased at Washington’s refusal to give economic aid in exchange for information on MIAs, has delayed several sessions since mid-1986. “At this meeting the United States will present information on unresolved cases of Americans from the Vietnam war era for Vietnamese investigation,” Petzing said.
And while Election ’88 rolled on, that’s just a little of what happened, this March 13, 1988 as presented by ABC Radio News.
