A few notes from the great Freddie Hubbard this weekend. Recorded live in concert by National Public Radio at the Boston Globe Jazz Festival on March 8, 1980.
Back when NPR ran the milestone weekly Jazz Alive! series, it was one of the last regular radio programs featuring Jazz in a live setting. It hosted a vast array of legends, notables and up-and-comers in the Jazz world and did much to promote the cause of Jazz in the U.S. during the 1970s and early 1980s.
Freddie Hubbard, one of the legends of the hard bop and post-bop school of Jazz trumpet, his unique and widely admired tone made him one of the cornerstones in Modern Jazz from the early 1960s on.
This concert, part of that Boston Globe Jazz Festival, was made at the Berklee Performance Center and features, in addition to Hubbard, Billy Childs on piano, Larry Klein on electric bass, Carl Burnett on drums and Sal Davis on percussion.
The rest, as they say, is history.
