It wasn’t a good day.

Started with a broken shoe lace – went downhill from there.

Why are you gaining weight? Why is your face breaking out? Why does your Mom give you Wheaties every morning?

Your boyfriend called – two flat tires and the car won’t start. Stuck taking the bus. Your girlfriends start asking questions.

He’s making excuses – he’s breaking up with you. You can feel it in your bloodstream. He called at 6 – you weren’t even awake.

It’s out to get you – the world. You want to go back to bed – it was warm there – you could dream.

Radio says rain – you hate rain – always kills your hair – makes you look like a wet rat.

Got a D on your Geography test. Do you really care about Tierra del Fuego? You need a cigarette.

Can’t smoke on the bus. You forgot your lunch money. Not even a watery Hot Chocolate.

You promised you’d go to Century City after school. Judy’s is having a sale – you’re broke.

It’s not fair. It always happens to you. Your mom wants you to get a job.

The Library said “maybe” they’d hire you – come back at the end of the semester.

Baby-sitting? You don’t like kids – they don’t like you either.

Your mom thinks you should work at an office part-time. You’d have to dress up. Maybe your mom could pay for clothes?

You still owe her for Christmas.

Face it – you’re stuck. It’s not fun being you, especially on a day like this one.

First Period Gym – your idea of dying and going straight to hell. They can’t make you run in the rain.

Miss Rogers can – Miss Rogers with whistle and tree-trunk legs, probably hasn’t had sex since the Middle-Ages.

Soaking wet and frozen – not even money for Coffee Cake.

You smell cigarettes. Back of the bus – window open and head down, trying not to draw attention.

Pops his head up. Looks just like Keir Dullea from 2001.

He cracks a grin – he’s cute – you’re in love. He motions you to join him in the back.

Heart skips all kinds of beats. Empty seat next to him. You can barely hear it, he has a transistor radio on.

Music – Newports and it stopped raining.

Might just be the best day of your life.

He does have a girlfriend though – she’s sitting in the row across from him. She hates cigarettes. She might hate you.

This is going to get very complicated.

And the music on the Transistor Radio is coming from no other place but KMET from January 10, 1970.

Figures.
