Festival season is upon us this year – music pouring out of every city, town and street corner in Europe this Summer; filling the air with amazement.
Tonight it’s Mertixell Nadermann from the 21st annual Radio Encendida Festival – an extravaganza of talent from Spain all broadcast live by RNE Radio 3 in Madrid. I hope to be posting a few more examples of what is a very healthy musical scene in Spain right now.
Coming from a family of musicians, Mertixell Nadermann began her musical and piano studies at the Aula de Música in Vilassar de Mar, from where she moved at the age of 13 to the Conservatory of Barcelona, where she completed her graduation with an Honorable Mention. Later, she combined his classical studies with those of jazz and modern music at the Taller de Músics . In the same year that she began her Composition studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, she obtained a scholarship to enter the Berklee College of Music in Boston, in the United States , where she studied piano performance, between 2010 and 2014, perfecting the styles of jazz, soul, gospel and Latin. Meritxell Nadermann obtained the Piano Performance Division Award two years in a row and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2014. During this period, she had the opportunity to collaborate with very prominent musicians, perform in internationally renowned venues and participate in recordings.
In 2014 Mertixell Nadermann moved to New York to complete her training as an instrumentalist, composer and arranger. There she collaborated with different neo-soul, jazz and fusion bands, and started her own project, the Meritxell Neddermann Trio. She later settled in Barcelona, where she has continued composing and playing with different projects.
With her sister Judit Nadermann, they began performing in some concerts as The Neddermann Sisters. In November 2019, they released a Christmas carol album together, titled Present, which includes several popular Christmas carols arranged with modern musical patterns, an original theme based on a poem by Salvador Espriu, and a traditional Venezuelan song.
On March 13, 2020, she released a solo album titled with songs in Catalan and English, in which she expresses her darkest emotions in search of inner peace and self-acceptance, while freeing herself from uncomfortable feelings. The project consists of a double album, one in short format and the other with the extended version of the songs, which contains ten tracks and two piano interludes.
As for the piano, her influences are classical music and gospel, with a particular preference for black American music. As for instrumentation, Mertixell Nadermann draws primarily from urban music, such as Chicago footwork.
