Since many of you are no doubt crawling out of bed, staring at the ceiling, reaching for the Advil or already up and out and taking a swipe at the New Year, I thought I would kick off this First day of January with a concert from the 2023 Paris Popfest by the Miki Berenyi Trio, as filmed by Sébastien Faits-Divers and Alexandre François on September 28th 2023 (you can watch the YouTube of the concert by clicking on the link). This is just the audio for those of you either driving, getting your land-legs together or party-related sight-impaired.
Having been a fan of Lush since their debut, mourning their (understandable) breakup, celebrating their reunion, lamenting their split and crossing my fingers for whatever Miki and Emma plan for the future, the appearance of Piroshka (Miki Berenyi’s solo project) and now the Miki Berenyi Trio (or MB3), which is actually Piroshka with a few personnel changes, further gives hope that Music is still in good places, still happening and still capable of sending warm chills.
I don’t think it was ever an issue of Musical perfection with Lush, nor was it with Piroshka, nor is it with the Miki Berenyi Trio. But what it has been all along, and continues to be, is honest music-making, a heartfelt and pure vision and a genuine desire to get a point across.
The constant through all of these ventures is the transportive nature of their music, their sound, their intention. Miki’s voice is hypnotic and plaintive; far-off, distant and dreamlike.
The nice part about all of this is the fact we get to hear it live and up-close because of their touring; appearing in the U.S. where Miki Berenyi (and Lush before) has had a loyal and growing audience – not to mention the fact that Miki’s book is great and a must-read if you haven’t gotten it already. So it’s that little bit more we know about the persona that informs the experience.
Starting the year off on a high and hopeful note – hopefully, I can post a 2025 concert at the end of the year.
