More tributes tonight – this one, for John Lodge of The Moody Blues who left us earlier today at 82. Not one of the founding members, Lodge joined The Moody Blues as they were phasing out of their earlier R&B phase into what would become known as Symphonic Rock with the release of their milestone Days Of Future Passed. John Lodge became one of the primary songwriters of band during this time, contributing songs which have gone on to become staples of the 60’s musical diet, the one which extended into the 1970s when the band went on hiatus with individual members exploring other projects.
But it was this period of time, 1967-1972 where they made their biggest impact and John Lodge was one of the key architects in that groundbreaking sound.
This session comes from the BBC Program Top Gear and it was recorded on July 16, 1968 and features live versions of songs from their second album, In Search Of The Lost Chord.
If you aren’t familiar with The Moody Blues, or only know about them via Nights In White Satin, these are further songs to check out. And if you were wondering who John Lodge was and his passing is so profound, this is one of the reasons.
You kind of had to be there – but in the right frame of mind, the Moody Blues were timeless.
