HUAC
HUAC Detroit – Representatives Scherer (L), McLardy (center) and Moulder (R) – the circus came to town.

While the Army-McCarthy Hearings were grabbing all the headlines, there were other hearings taking place in other cities around the country – Starting in May of 1954, The House Un-American Activities (HUAC) Hearings landed in Detroit. Those proceedings, unlike the main one on Capitol Hill were not carried live but with a re-cap later that same evening. This one is from day three and four.

A total of 89 persons had been subpenaed to testify before the HUAC public hearings which opened on Monday, Rep. Kit Clardy, of Lansing, said Friday. Clardy said two new witnesses gave vaulable information to the committee in executive session the previous Friday. The Lansing Republican was sitting as a one-man subcommittee, preparing for the formal hearings. Clardy declined to identify either of the mystery witnesses, although one was reportedly a University of Michigan professor.

Reps. Scherer (R., O.) and Moulder, (D., Mo.) joined Clardy for the public ses sions. There was no live television or radio coverage of the hearings which will were to last through Saturday in Detroit and then move on to Flint and Lansing, Clardy said. Detroit station WJR was planning to broadcast tape recorded highlights of the hearings.

Here are two days hearings, back to back as broadcast by WJR in Detroit on May 4th and 5th 1954.
