Aside from his extensive work in Music and TV, Mitch Miller was also an avid interviewer. In the late 1950s and early 60s he hosted his own daily radio show on the CBS Radio Network. His Sunday evening program was broadcast from Sardi’s East in New York and featured a wide range of guests, mostly from the area of entertainment, Broadway and Films.

This episode of Sunday Evening With Mitch from January 1961 features a discussion between Mitch along with Mike Nichols and Elaine May, actress and designer Arlene Dahl and actor Zachary Scott. Both Scott and Dahl are names probably not familiar to many – both were well-known figures in film and stage in the 1950s and 60s. Mike Nichols and Elaine May are probably the best known; Nichols especially since his shift in careers in the 1960s to directing and being responsible for some of the most iconic films of the last few decades.

But this program predates all that, and Nichols and May at the time were smash hits on Broadway with their sell-out performances of An Evening With Mike Nichols And Elaine May.

It’s an interesting half-hour and a look into what Popular Culture was all about in the early years of the 1960s.
