FDR Addresses the 1932 Democratic Convention – in the midst of scary times.

As we get ready to start the 2024 Democratic convention next month, I thought I would run a snapshot from another convention, this one from New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, accepting the party’s nomination for President in that harrowing year of 1932.

FDR: “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people. Let us all here assembled constitute ourselves prophets of a new order of competence and of courage. This is more than a political campaign; it is a call to arms. Give me your help, not to win votes alone, but to win in this crusade to restore America to its own people.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Here is an extended excerpt from that speech, given by FDR on the closing day of the 1932 Democratic Convention, held in Chicago and broadcast to the nation via that marvel of high-tech; radio.
