Over to Paris this week for a concert, recorded only 10 days ago, featuring the visiting Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev and featuring wunderkind violinist Alena Baeva in music by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Starting with the Second Violin Conerto (top player), and continuing with the 7th Symphony “Leningrad” (bottom player) – it’s all Shostakovich by one of the stellar orchestras of Russia, led by one of the world’s great conductors.
Maybe not entirely anti-Road Rage – but a good one nonetheless, and Baeva is an excellent violinist and wholeheartedly embraces the complexities of Shostakovich and plays the 2nd Violin Concerto with ease and authority. And the recording by Radio France Musique is their usual top-notch.
A good concert to get comfortable with.
