Probably not that much of a familiar name here in the States, but a well known figure in the UK, particularly in the area of political activism and Music-As-Protest. Billy Bragg, whose mixture of Folk, Punk and Protest Songs has earned him a very big reputation in Europe, really got started in 1977 as the result of watching The Clash perform during their White Riot tour. He formed a Pub Rock/Punk Rock band, Riff Raff with Wiggy which didn’t do well and it caused Bragg to drop out and re-group, before finally re-emerging in 1981 as a solo artist and singer-songwriter. The rest is history.
If you aren’t familiar with the music of Bill Bragg, here is a sample by way of a concert he did at the 1995 Glastonbury Festival, faithfully recorded by the ever-present BBC 6 Music.
Don’t be surprised when you suddenly hear strains of This Land Is Your Land towards the end. It’s what Billy Bragg is all about.
