Election '92
Election ’92 – The sheer nostalgia leaves us dewey-eyed.

CBS World News Roundup – April 28, 1992 – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –

Reminder of a day of relative calm, cautious economy and spirited vote-getting, this April 28, 1992. Election ’92 was in Primary mode, with candidates lining up and making their best pitch to win nomination. This was election day in Pennsylvania with Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton projected to be a sure bet to win much needed delegates. President Bush was getting some competition from Arlen Specter and Ross Perot was getting high marks in California and would very well have beaten Bill Clinton if California was holding their primary this day. President Bush was still anticipated to win in any case.

And while Election ’92 was criss-crossing the country, Congress was expected to return to work after Spring break and ready to take on an avalanche of issues and potential scandals. President Bush, while campaigning put Congress on blast for the lack of action on the spending Bill, which was languishing on Capitol Hill since January. Only one of the many issues facing lawmakers as they come back from vacation. In addition to spending, also on tap were major fights over unemployment, Abortion and a whole new controversy from the House Bank Affair which came in the new form of a possible new scandal involving potential members of Congress. Special Counsel investigating the affair came up with possible evidence of criminal check-kiting on individual members accounts. Special Counsel didn’t indicate if it was actually members or House officials suspected of wrong-doing.

And there was more gunfire in Afghanistan this day, but it was in celebration as the new provisional government raced into Kabul. Afghanistan’s interim leaders arrived in the capitol of Kabul with a convoy of cars and trucks carrying thousands of heavily armed rebels, who fired their arms in the air to celebrate victory over the former Communist regime. The aim was to set up a provisional government which would eventually lead to democratic rule, but Afghans were still bitterly divided over who should run the country now. We’d find out soon enough.

And along with Election ’92 capturing America’s imagination and votes, the rest of the world was trudging forward on this April 28, 1992 as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.
