Over to Paris this week for some down-to-earth music making by Orchestre National Il de France, led by Enrique Mazzola and featuring pianist Cedric Tiberghien in a concert from the Salle Pleyel in Paris and broadcast by Radio France Musique on November 7, 2014.
Starting with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto Number 5 “Emperor” with Cedric Tiberghien – and then to the Hary Janos Suite by Zoltan Kodaly and ending up with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
Italian conductor Enrique Mazzola is Music Director at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where he recently announced his extension to 2031. He is also Principal Guest Conductor at Deutsche Oper Berlin.
In the 2024/25 season, Mazzola conducts the Lyric Opera in productions of Rigoletto and Fidelio, Missy Mazzoli’s The Listeners, and a programme of works by Puccini with star soprano, Sondra Radvanovksy. He returns to the Deutsche Oper Berlin for runs of Macbeth and Werther, New National Theatre Tokyo with Madama Butterfly and makes his debut at the Aspen Festival.
Recent highlights on the operatic stage include debuts with Salzburg Festspiele (Orphée aux Enfers), Wiener Staatsoper (Don Pasquale) and Dutch National Opera with a full cycle of Donizetti’s Queens (Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, Roberto Devereux). Mazzola also brought the same cycle to Opernhaus Zürich. Notable returns include Metropolitan Opera, Bregenzer Festspiele and Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Deutsche Oper Berlin with a landmark performance of the Meyerbeer cycle.
On the symphonic stage, Mazzola has made debuts with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Oslo Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Taipei Symphony, Utah Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonic, Brussels Philharmonic, Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, and Swedish Radio Symphony. Other highlights include performances with Vienna Symphony, London Philharmonic and Bern Philharmonic.
Cédric Tiberghien is a French pianist who has established a truly international career. He has been particularly applauded for his versatility, as demonstrated by his wide-ranging repertoire, interesting programming, an openness to explore innovative concert formats and his dynamic chamber music partnerships.
Concerto appearances in the 2023-24 season include his debut with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestras as well as re-invitations to the London Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and Orchestre National de Lyon. His solo and chamber appearances, the later with Alina Ibragimova and the Chiaroscuro Quartet, include performances in London, Brussels and Berlin. Cédric has a long association with the Wigmore Hall in London, where he is currently performing a complete Beethoven variation cycle, juxtaposed with works by other composers, illustrating the evolution of the genre.
Last season Cédric performed Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony with both the Berliner Philharmoniker (Simone Young) and Orchestre National de France (Cristian Macelaru). Other recent collaborations have included the Boston Symphony, Cleveland, London Symphony, NDR Elbphilharmonie, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestras and at the BBC Proms with Les Siècles. His conductor collaborations include Karina Canellakis, Nicholas Collon, Stéphane Denève, Edward Gardner, Enrique Mazzola, Ludovic Morlot, Matthias Pintscher, François-Xavier Roth and Simone Young.
On to the concert.
