A tribute this week by way of a memorable concert and an astounding collaboration between two giants of the guitar; John McLaughlin and the late and much revered Paco de Lucia, who passed away last week of a heart attack while vacationing in Mexico, at the far-too-early age of 66.
To say this collaboration was inspired is to put it mildly. Beyond the technical proficiency and Flamenco pyrotechnics beat a single heart of consummate love for music and dedication to the art of the instruments they played. To hear them together in this concert was to hear one cohesive unit, exploring, searching and attaining new heights – the expression of two souls joined as one. Truly, creative expression at its purest.
So by way of tribute, to not only the memory of a gifted and profound artist, but a celebration of all the beauty and inspiration it brings, here is that memorable collaboration between John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, recorded in concert from East Berlin on July 17, 1987.
Enjoy, and be grateful this happened – and it will always be around to remind us.
