Once again over to Switzerland for another deep-dive into the extensive Archives of Swiss Radio.
This weekend it’s the music of Klaus Cornell, as performed by the Radio Symphony of Beromünster led by the composer.
Isekar, suite for Orchestra composed in 1961 and given here in a broadcast performance on December 5, 1962 (presumably the first).
Klaus Cornell was considered a passionate explorer, as the daily newspaper “Der Bund” honored him on Tuesday.
After attending the Bern Conservatory, he studied at the Mozarteum Music Academy in Salzburg, where he taught under Sandor Veress, among others. In 1955, he received the Austrian State Prize.
Cornell held leading positions at Swiss Radio for many years, where he conducted, among other things, the Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the 1970s and 1980s, Cornell was chief conductor of the Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra.
From 1956 to 1960, he was Kapellmeister of the Basel Opera and composer-in-residence for the Deutsche Oper (DG) in Hamburg. From 1961 to 1983, Cornell held leading positions at Swiss Radio, conducting the Bern Radio Opera, the Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Chamber Ensemble. From 1971 to 1987, Cornell was chief conductor of the Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre Romand, and the Kloten Chamber Orchestra. In 1983, he was appointed Music Director and Director of the Conservatory in Schaffhausen. From 1984, he was conductor of the subscription concerts and the Chamber Orchestra of the Musik-Collegium. In 1955 Klaus Cornell received the Austrian State Prize, in 1965 the UER Composition Prize and in 1982 the ORF Prize for the best radio concert and in 1988 he was awarded the Carl Oechslin Prize of the city of Schaffhausen.
Composer and conductor Klaus Cornell, was born in Bern on August 18, 1932, died in Konstanz on March 12, 2021.
