Peter Gabriel – the end of one era, the beginning of another.
Peter Gabriel in the Lunchroom today – recorded by L.A. Radio station KMET-FM on April 10, 1977 at The Roxy in West Hollywood.
Somewhat ironic, in a way – only a few years earlier The Roxy played host to Genesis in what became an extended stay and a complete surprise to their American record label, Atlantic. In 1973 it was the Genesis of Peter Gabriel, who helped create one of the milestone bands of the Progressive Rock era.
When Peter left the band in 1975 he took a sizable chunk of fans with him – most feeling that Genesis was Peter Gabriel and his absence left an incomprehensible hole in the band and its future. Many didn’t understand the sudden shift in Genesis, from Progressive to Mainstream. But then too, many were wondering how Peter Gabriel as solo artist whose theatrical and larger-than-life presence, would translate as a solo artist.
Took a little getting used to – the Peter Gabriel of quirky turn-of-phrase and surreal presentation, transformed into an artist of depth, range and deeply personal introspection. Perhaps that was always the intention, but this transformation of Peter Gabriel was a journey worth taking because it signified an artist maturing before our eyes (and ears). A journey that continues, almost 50 years later.
So this return to The Roxy was significant on a lot of levels – back to the scene of the crime, but also witness to changes and an evolution into an enduring figure in Contemporary music.
Interesting to note, several people in the audience were still hoping it was all a joke and Supper’s Ready would pull an “ah-ha, fooled you” before the sold-out crowd. But no, this was new territory and a new Peter Gabriel had arrived and he was here to stay.
This concert coincides with the release of his debut album, produced by Bob Ezrin and a decided change in approach and sound. Reviews went from mixed to ecstatic -more or less echoing the sentiments of the audience. The game changer was Solisbury Hill which acted as the pivot.
The adventure was on.
So as a reminder of that first gig – that debut album – that transformation, here is Peter Gabriel at The Roxy as presented live, the night of April 10, 1977 over KMET.
Enjoy lunch.
