– Will Bernard Trio – Live At Beach Chalet -San Francisco, April 8, 1998 – Jason Brodsky Soundboard Recording –
Will Bernard Trio, live at Beach Chalet in San Francisco, recorded on April 8, 1998.
I can understand why fans who make discoveries want to keep those discoveries to themselves because they want a: bragging rights or b: don’t want the artist to lose that spirit that often comes with wide recognition.
From what I’ve been reading, Will Bernard is something of an undiscovered gem. Maybe that was true several years ago, but judging from what looks like a healthy touring schedule and festival appearances for this year and next, word is getting around and hitting receptive ears.
And that’s a good thing because, if this gig is any indication, Will Bernard has a lot to say and needs to be heard in a lot more places. It also helps when recordings like these are available as examples of what the artist is all about because it puts them in the best possible light. And if Jason Brodsky is a fan, the house mixer or a friend of the band, he did a great job and you need friends like these to help things along.
I am starting to think Jazz is coming back into its own – having been neglected for a few decades and reserved for purists and fellow musicians. Jazz needs to be heard – its spirit and sentiment need to be available and explored. For musicians looking to expand horizons, Jazz has always been the reservoir – of talent – of ideas – of points of view. The three elements that are universal in all genres, but crucial in this one.
I could yammer on for days about the importance of Jazz in our daily diet. But the spotlight this weekend is on Will Bernard and his trio which consists of Scott Amendola on drums and Trevor Bunn on bass. Together they make for a nicely adventuresome ensemble.
All in all – something to sit down and get quiet with – he’s also been doing a lot of collaborations since 1990 and it would do you well to investigate what else is going on by visiting his website and scrolling around.
Big amazing world out there – just got to be open to it.
Dig in.
