June 15, 1995 – A day focused on the madness in Eastern Europe. The Battle for Sarajevo had begun. Bosnian Serb Military officials claimed that government troops had been raining artillery fire on a town just north of Sarajevo in an apparent attempt to break a three year siege of the Capitol. UN Officials said that government troops had set up 22 new checkpoints around the area of Soko, where the troop buildup was reported heaviest. There were also reports of heavy weapons fire in the Bosnian held Serbian town of Ilijis, which was the likely target of any government offensive. The only road into Sarajevo was closed earlier in the day. And in the city, residents were putting up sandbag protection which had been taken down when a ceasefire came into effect at the first of the year. To Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, this new offensive was proof there was no hope for a negotiated end to the war. For his part, Karadzic told reporters that the 26 peace-keepers being held by the Serbs would not be released unless the UN releases 4 Serbs it had it its custody. Meanwhile, chaos reigned in Bosnia.
President Clinton was heading off to Halifax, Nova Scotia for the G-7 Conference where the morass that was Bosnia was capturing much of the Conference attention. When the subject finally turns around to economics, Clinton was expected to brag about his country’s deficit was now the lowest of all G-7 countries which, in actuality wasn’t entirely true. Still, it sounded good.
Not sounding so good was the explanation singer Michael Jackson was giving over his latest controversy – on top of allegations that he abused young boys also came raised eyebrows over certain lyrics to one of the new songs. “Jew me – sue me/Kick me – Kike me” had many wondering just what and who The King of Pop was thinking about. Damage control came roaring in, along with Jackson’s own reaction that he was not a racist person; he loved all people and that he had no intention of offending anyone in the Jewish community.
