Heading over to Madrid this lunch hour for a session by Izaro, recorded at Radio Nacional España just a few days ago for their Los Conciertos de Radio 3 series.
Izaro has been around a while. Even approaching 30 she’s been actively on the scene for some 10 years; composing for film, recording, performing and touring (Primarily in Europe).
Ironically, she was studying Physics in College before switching to Communication and then discovering Music was calling to her; loud and clear – picking up a guitar and writing lyrics and setting off for a career gigging the old fashioned way: bars, cafés, house concerts – anyplace that would have her and any audience who would listen. She spent time in California, in college finishing up studies before finally making the commitment and diving into recording her debut album in 2016.
Her second album, Limones Invierno came out in 2020, just in time for the pandemic and subsequent lockdown which slowed down her momentum, at least for a while. Adhering all the restrictions (no intimate clubs – no house concerts) she managed to do some 70 concerts during this period around her native Bilbao Spain as well as traveling to Mexico City. During that time she gathered several awards, including Best New Album in 2021.
Once all the restrictions were lifted, Izaro picked up where she left off touring – it’s taken her, in addition to gigging all over Spain to playing in Paris, Buenos Aires, Helsinki – some 116 concerts by the end of 2023.
Since America has just gotten into mixing music from other countries and in other languages into the stew of contemporary music, barriers which were deal breakers for International musicians as recently as some 10 years ago are quickly fading now – which is great because there’s a lot going on in other parts of the world and you can’t miss out on this; not now.
So take a half-hour and dive into the music of Izaro (whose full name is Izaro Andres Zelaieta) – check out her website – and check out RNE’s website of concerts, sessions and festivals (lots to discover!).
