Phoebe Bridgers – The future’s in good hands.

Starting Monday lunch with Phoebe Bridgers at the 2022 Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. Recorded on August 8, 2022.

Further evidence I can’t be everywhere all the time. Been spending so much time these past few years, rummaging through festivals and radio stations in Europe and making discoveries by artists and bands from other countries that I haven’t had time to pay attention to what’s happening in my own neighborhood. I assumed you all were inundated by locals, so anything I ran across would be overkill.

But Phoebe Bridgers is a different story. During a time when the audience is complaining that music is sounding the same and not exploring anything new or different – or even writing about the current situations we’re all faced with (which was a lynchpin for Rock in the 60s), along comes this Pasadena native who is a brilliant tunesmith, captivating singer and compelling performer that I ask myself “what have I missed?” Color me idiot.

Clearly, Phoebe Bridgers has something to say – something worthwhile – something heartfelt and honest. In a word; Refreshing.

Her songs are emotionally charged, but they are about something – no posing, no coping attitudes. Even her communication with the audience is straight forward and down-to-earth. She has connected to a sea full of strangers that makes them feel they are all related. And she’s singing about what we’re going through now – she’s connecting and touching nerves. It’s a healthy sign for contemporary music when observation becomes the foundation for songs about the human condition. Means we’re still up, have a pulse and breathing.

And her audience is huge. One of the things that drew my attention to just how popular Phoebe Bridgers is was listening to Radio X in London the other day, talking about “Lost Weekend” her latest album, which was released on Friday and how much this new album has been anticipated by the UK audience. So if the Brits are excited about Phoebe Bridgers, who am I not to investigate?

So forgive me for being late to the party – I will stay on the case. You will hear more.

In the meantime, it’s 2022 and you’re smack in the middle of Golden Gate Park. Crank it up and enjoy. I posted a link to get Lost Weekend on Bandcamp – here it is again: Lost Weekend

And while you’re listening and lunching . . .
