Thala in concert for this Friday Junior lunchroom. Recorded at the 2021 Reeperbahn Festival and broadcast by West German Radio.
It’s always fun to run across an unfamiliar name and be pleasantly surprised at what you hear.
Here’s what Angela Betancourt from Blurred Culture had to say regarding her SXSW 2023 performance:
Thala, the German singer-songwriter, has been making waves with her dreamy shoegaze pop music. With the release of her debut album “adolescence” in September 2021, Thala’s unique style has caught the attention of music lovers worldwide. The album explores themes of reflection and self-discovery, as Thala takes listeners on a journey of looking back at adolescence from a wiser perspective and searching for answers about the future in the past. Her singles, including “Curtain Call” and “You Had 2,” are just as powerful, featuring incisive lyrics and cinematic-sounding melodies that draw on early ’90s shoegaze, punk, and alternative pop.
Despite being a relative newcomer to the music scene, Thala’s raw and honest talent has been evident from the beginning. She began as a street musician in 2019, but it wasn’t long before her beautifully soft soundscapes and relatable lyrics caught the attention of passersby. Her music is not too retro, nor is it average indie; it is truly unique and stands out on its own.
You heard it here (actually, you heard it from Blurred Culture) – over to you – relax, enjoy lunch and press Play.
