The Beta Band – with the shiniest of promises.

Friday afternoon lunch with The Beta Band – recorded for Bernard Lenoir of The Black Sessions at Radio France International Studio 105 on June 10, 2004.

A fascinating band with an equally fascinating and wildly frustrating history.

I grabbed a bit of history regarding this session via the RFI Black Sessions website – provides a few clues:

In 2004, The Beta Band took over Studio 105 for a legendary Black Session. The Scottish band showcased their unique alchemy, blending folk, psychedelia, and trip-hop. A rare recording that captures the magic of a group that has become a cult favorite.

“We’re going to witness a real happening tonight with the most eccentric of Scottish bands,” Bernard Lenoir remarked in his introduction, and for good reason: The Beta Band is a strange group in the indie pop scene. In eight years of activity, the Edinburgh band has tried just about everything, earning the respect of their peers, and not just any peers: Radiohead, for whom they opened, and Oasis, these two Britpop heavyweights, even telling anyone who would listen that they would like to collaborate with the group. Quite something.

With their skillful blend of folk, rock, psychedelia, trip hop and hip-hop, The Beta Band aimed to sound like the music of the future by gleefully mixing those of the past in a true sonic kaleidoscope.

Everything was going swimmingly at Studio 105 in June 2004 for The Beta Band, who had just released their third album, Heroes to Zeros.  The future looked bright. And yet, less than two months later, to everyone’s surprise, the band self-destructed and imploded. The members continued with various musical projects but never regained the success of The Beta Band.

Nevertheless, this anthology-worthy Black Session remains, where high-flying psychedelia rubs shoulders with the effectiveness of pop melodies, the secret of which only these adventurers of sound matter, always ready to astonish, had.

So with all that in mind, here is the session Radio France mentioned and you can have a listen while you grab lunch.

It’s Friday after all.
