Wolf Alice for lunch today – recorded at the 2025 Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona on July 14, 2025.
One of those bands that keep reaching and striving, Wolf Alice did a standout performance for the crowd in Barcelona, part of a tour promoting their soon-to-be-released fourth album, The Clearing which came out on August 22nd; their first since 2021 when Blue Weekend was released – this one was part of the Primavera Sound Festival on July 14th and broadcast live by Radio Nacional de España.
A band very much on radar by the Press, Wolf Alice released The Clearing to uniformly rave reviews, with very few detractors here and there (aren’t there always?). It signified not necessarily a change in direction as much as a research project; visiting and diving into genres from a few decades past, unearthing some gems and turning them into their own. The result has been a solidly produced and engaging album that covers a myriad of bases and covers them well. Further evidence Wolf Alice is around for the long haul and has a lot to say.
A few questioned their visit to the quiet parts, but my feeling about that is; everybody can be loud – takes a special talent to switch gears to the low-key. Sometimes it ain’t how loud you play as much as how soft you can grab the same emotion and make it your own – Wolf Alice has nailed it.
I notice I have been running Wolf Alice concerts pretty much every year for the past several years. I find them to be significant and thoroughly enjoyable to follow. Unlike many bands of recent vintage, they are on a constant journey to shape and sculpt. That’s the whole deal, isn’t it?
Loving this – loving them, and looking forward to what they’ve got in store for festival season this year. I’ll let you know how it goes.
In the meantime, grab lunch, have a sit down and a listen.
