Palestine 1947
The view from Palestine – Arab reprisals – Jewish Reprisals – Brits stuck in the middle.

By the announcers own admission, the news was hot today – much to do with Palestine and Arab reprisals against Jews and British troops stuck in the middle. Seems the latest wave of bombings was directed at British troops trying to maintain peace ahead of the Partition. No such luck. Jewish extremists struck in Palestine, bombing a Police billet and badly damaging a Police barracks with six British Policemen missing, presumed buried under rubble. There was even a bomb scare in Cairo linked to the goings on in Palestine. Things were heating all over.

General Marshall was slated to arrive back in Washington later in the evening at the conclusion of the Moscow conference. Winging his way home after a Vodka and Caviar sendoff, Marshall expressed his regrets that no progress had been made at the Conference, and he was planning on giving a full report as soon as possible – one as an address to the American people and the other, the more frank assessment behind closed doors on Capitol Hill. John Foster Dulles, Marshall’s assistant was more abrupt and to the point, saying that despite the lack of progress, the bi-partisan American delegation did much to hammer out a compromise. Another important point was the increased level of unity among French, British and American delegations. It was good, but Dulles felt it wasn’t good enough as he was hoping for a Four-Power unity. It was all up to the future to decide.

And 1948 Presidential hopeful Henry Wallace was denied access to the Hollywood Bowl in order to stage a rally on behalf of the Progressive Citizens of America. The Directors of the Hollywood decided that the facility cannot be used as a springboard for “ideologies foreign to the majority thought at this time”.

And with the situation in Palestine growing more tense, that’s just a sample of what was going on this April 25th 1947 as presented by The NBC World News Roundup and NBC News Of The World.
