I was hoping we’d make it to the end of the year (a little over a week away) without news of one more passing of a musical giant. But no – seems 2014 is destined to go out as a year of huge loss in the world of Music.
With the news this morning of the passing of the legendary Joe Cocker, one more immense and essential element in the history of Rock is now gone.
Acknowledged as one of the greatest, if not the greatest Rock and Soul singer Britain produced, Joe Cocker became a household name right after his appearance at Woodstock in 1969 and never let up until earlier this year when signs were looking ominous over his deteriorating health.
Never one to “phone it in”, Joe Cocker gave 110% with every concert and every session.
As tribute to an astonishing artist, who has left behind an enormous legacy of music and an impossibly high bar to exceed, here are some sessions Joe Cocker did for the BBC, recorded between 1968 and 1969. They vary in quality and show. Some are for John Peel and others are for Top of The Pops and Saturday Club. But they give a solid glimpse of who we were first turned on to, and never forgot after we heard him. The voice which has stayed with us for so long, and is now sadly silenced, but will live on for generations to come.
Rest in Peace, Joe Cocker (1944-2014).
