Stereolab – . . .The world became Retro-Futurist and never looked back.
Stereolab this afternoon – in concert at Metro in Chicago and recorded on December 7, 1999 by Aadam Jacobs as part of the AJCProject at Archive.org. I can’t stress how important this newly discovered collection is and how much it has added to the legacies of so many artists – I would suggest you check it out: https://archive.org/details/@aadam_jacobs_collection – you’ll be hearing more of these concerts in the coming weeks. But don’t wait for me – there’s a lot of exploring to do.
Stereoloab – as viewed from the Prog Archives: Aped by indie artists and sampled by hip-hop producers, Stereolab’s effortless sensuality and cool has reached a wide and diverse array of players in and outside the prog sphere like Sufjan Stevens, Broadcast, Bruno Pernadas, Vanishing Twin, the Snobs, Sei Still, J Dilla, Pavement, the Internet’s Steve Lacy, Atlas Sound, Tyler, the Creator and many others. Fans of Stereolab’s lush and expansive beauty will find common cause with similar PA artists such as Pram, Aksak Maboul, Aquaserge, Can, L’Rain, Tortoise, Tom Zé, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Art Bears, Os Mutantes and even Yes.
If you aren’t already familiar with them, here’s a great opportunity to get acquainted – one of the bands that clearly defined the spirit of experimentation and reaching outer limits in Popular Music. Hardly mainstream, but that’s no deterrent – as you can see by the ProgArchives post, they’ve had influence in lots of places, so they should come as no surprise to you.
And you get to enjoy lunch with them. How cool is that?
