Long before there was the TV version of Nightline, which bore no relation to this radio version (whole different network), Nightline was something of a bedtime companion – your buddy in the world of kilocycles. Like the weekend service, Monitor – NBC had started a program that would embrace the basic concept that Radio was capable of being anywhere, doing anything, anytime for everyone – and like Monitor, Nightline was filled with everything from the mundane to the late breaking story happening on the other side of the globe; all geared to something you were going to head off to bed listening to.

Like Monitor, Nightline was network radio’s last gasp at popularity before giving way to the vagaries of Top-40 and the rapidly growing Youth Culture just around the corner.

This particular episode was typical of the Nightline formula. Opening the first Hamburger stand in London – a helicopter ride over Washington D.C. – talk about President Eisenhower’s disarmament agreement with Russia – and lots of music between stories. An engaging hour’s worth of radio – all happening on NBC Radio’s Nightline this Wednesday night, May 15th in 1957.
