December 21, 1981 – The odyssey of Poland continues. With government crackdowns and now threats of moving after the Roman Catholic Church as it imposed martial Law, a state of perpetual volatility spread throughout the country. Latest word from Warsaw was the Militia had arrested and beaten several priests in the cities of Wroclaw and Gdansk, where the church was heavily involved in the Solidarity Labor movement. Warsaw Radio went on to say the Militia was making headway against strikes. The broadcast went on to say Police ended walkouts at three mines in Katowice Province and the Army persuaded workers at three factories to return to their jobs. And reports of various Solidarity leaders were under arrest for a variety of charges from pouring glue on machinery to conveying information for the Union.
And there was news of another defection of a Polish Ambassador in Washington, saying all the circumstances had not been explained and that an investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, Italian security forces concentrated their search for kidnapped American General James Dozier to the area of Verona, where Dozier seized a week earlier. They were conducting house-to-house searches in a summer resort area a few miles east of Verona where Summer homes were largely unoccupied, hoping to find the terrorists and General Dozier perhaps holed up in a basement of one of these houses. But so far the searches have proven unsuccessful. A half dozen American experts on terrorism joined the Italian authorities in the investigation.
And French officials described as premature reports that President Francois Mitterrand was planning on postponing his official visit to Israel because of the annexation of the Golan Heights. Government spokespersons refused to deny those rumors, but said the French President was due to arrive in Israel on February 10.
