Tributes this morning – the news that Eric Carmen past away yesterday seems another in a long line of passings – one seemingly having no ending – but still . . .
In case you forgot, or didn’t know in the first place – Eric Carmen, who was originally front man/lead singer for the early 70s band The Raspberries and who went on to a successful career as singer-songwriter was pretty much a fixture of the 70s mainstream Rock music scene. Having been responsible for that 70s anthem “Go All The Way” signalling, if you were around at the time, the era of “rampant abandon” – in short, a wildly active sexual revolution for that decade, one which I strongly doubt we may see again (but . .I could be wrong).
Going from The Raspberries to a solo career, Eric Carmen’s music took a decidedly mellower approach, having scored a major hit with the melancholy and plaintive “All By Myself” as well as a string of hits coming under the heading “Power ballads” before withdrawing from the scene around 1980 and re-emerging in 1984, picking up where he left off.
This concert, recorded at The Roxy in West Hollywood and broadcast over KMET-FM on December 19, 1975 comes just after his departure from The Raspberries and embarking on his solo career. The audience is enthusiastic and it’s all wrapped up with “Go All The Way” as an encore.
So now you know and we lost another one – it’s sad no matter how you slice it whether you were a fan of Eric Carmen or not. Music is an enormous tent and it embraces a vast number of genres. That’s why music is forever – and the ones who create it are never far from our thoughts.
Have a listen, remember and enjoy. RIP Eric Carmen (1949-2024)
