brother
On a scale of None to Zero, but your brother would kill you anyway.

– KHJ – Johnny Williams/Tommy Vance – November 23, 1965 – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –

In retrospect, you were a moron. The physical possibilities were zilch at best. She was two years older than you – she was a senior – you were a freshman – to make matters worse, she was your brother’s girlfriend. Practically incest.

But you couldn’t help it – you were in love; deep-down-forever-love. The kind of love they write songs about. Every time you saw her (which was most days) your heart would explode and you’d shake uncontrollably. You know because brother would often ask if you had stopped breathing.

She reminded you of everything you loved about life. Even from someone who hadn’t lived in it too much – she was the One. You gave serious thought to writing her; one of those confessional letters where you laid all your feelings out on a sheet of paper. But knowing you, she would show it to your brother and that would be the end of your life as you knew it. You totally envisioned him beating the crap out of you – and there’d be nothing you could do about it. Your parents would be on his side and you would be sent off to live with some relatives in another state until you were eighteen.

Every so often she’d smile at you – but it was the kind of smile you’d see on a stuffed animal at Sears. Little did she know there was a bubbling volcano about to blow any minute.

But it didn’t happen – and when your brother broke up with her just before Christmas, your chance to make the big confession never materialized, because you’d never see her again. Something about her graduating and going to Berkeley and long distance romances never working out. Even your brother was miserable.

She was on your mind for a long time – so long, that you passed up some pretty good chances with those girls who thought the world of you, but like an idiot, you didn’t notice.

A bag of mixed up feelings and impulses racing around your brain – lucky for you your brother gave you a transistor radio for your birthday. And KHJ is drowning out every insane idea you’ve come up with, all hours of the day – thank god for The Turtles.

Here is a 40+ minute chunk of KHJ from November 23, 1965 featuring none other than Johnny Mitchell and Tommy Vance.
