John Douglas – poignant contemplation of the day to day.

2. Leave Me Alone – John Douglas, from the album “I’m Not The Fella” – Reveal Records

Two by Singer-songwriter John Douglas from his debut album “I’m Not The Fella”, issued earlier this year. If the name John Douglas doesn’t immediately ring a bell or two, perhaps his long-time association with the legendary Transcan Sinatras will. Although sampling these two tracks will make the connection almost instant.

Traschcan Sinatras has been one of the truly standout bands going back to the 80s. Hastily labeled as “Jangle Pop”, the band offered exquisitely crafted songs, which has been their trademark ever since, putting them several notches ahead of the competition.

Knowing John Douglas is an integral part of that legacy only makes this an added joy in listening. The same heartfelt, often poignant observations of life are here in full view. Writing with that keen and sharp edge – honest work and situations portrayed in intricate and loving detail. It’s the thing that turns perfunctory song writing into human excursions – emotions buried deep but saying volumes in the turn of phrase.

I’ve always felt the true worth of a songwriter is their ability to portray life as it is – conjuring the beauty from the sometimes painful but often obscure moments. Turning them, not from expressions of forced or contrived sensibilities, but to flesh-and-blood insights of everyday events. There’s a lot to notice in the world – it’s not all explosions and bullets – folded hands speak volumes.

John Douglas, and these two samples from his debut album (which is available and you are urged to grab a copy) offer a deeply affecting glimpse into an artist with the gift; the gift of keen observation and unflinching honesty.
