The inimitable and sadly missed Mink (Willy) DeVille this morning. In concert at the 1982 Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands, recorded by the venerable VPRO Radio Network on May 31, 1982.
DeVille was a devotee of traditional American Pop/Soul and R&B and was a popular figure from 1974 until Mink DeVille dissolved in 1986. Willy DeVille (real name: William Paul Borsey) continued on as an influential singer/songwriter (although Mink DeVille as a band really ceased to exist after 1980, it carried on as a series of pickup bands until 1986). And even though his career went through a series of ups and downs over the next few decades, he worked with some of the greatest names in Popular Music and has left an indelible impression on Rock. Unfortunately, DeVille died in 2009 of Pancreatic Cancer. His legacy lives on in performances like this and the vast number of great songs he wrote.
