The legendary Rahsaan Roland Kirk this weekend. A concert given in Poland from 1967 and recorded by Polish Radio.
One of the truly unique voices in Jazz, Kirk was known for his simultaneous playing of several saxes (or other wind instruments) at once, and his astonishing breath control. And on top of all this, he was blind. So there is no question as to the uniqueness and unreal musicianship Rahsaan Roland Kirk had accomplished.
A few attempts have been made by other musicians to play 2 saxophones at once, but no one has ever been able to match or remotely capture the spirit or sheer inventiveness of Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
If you aren’t familiar with this giant, you really need to drop everything and check this out. And when you’re finished, grab whatever albums you can find (there are most, if not all his recorded output re-issued in one form or another) and seriously investigate this amazing musician.
In the meantime, thanks to Polish Radio for preserving this – a taste of Rahsaan Roland Kirk in concert from 1967.
