By the time of this session in 1974, The Tubes were already something of Bay Area legends. Formed in 1972, they quickly attracted much attention via their Art School affiliations. By 1974 they were well on their way to crafting the stage act which would lead them to being signed by A&M Records, with the resulting debut album released in 1975 and a huge worldwide following shortly after.
But in 1974 they were still working things out,. Some songs work, and some don’t. But signs of the future would be clearly present in such mid-70s anthems as White Punks On Dope. For that reason, this in-studio session could be considered historic.
Introduced by the iconic Tom Donahue, this is a session from a band on the threshold of having their futures change. It’s exciting, when you think of how it turned out, only months later.
Here is that session, as it was originally broadcast by KSAN-FM in San Francisco on June 2, 1974. The rest, as they say, is history.
